This deposit from Honduras is one of the oldest recorded opal mines in the world. It is also one of the largest opal deposits in the Western Hemisphere.
The mine has been yielding precious opal since the early 1800's and is still quite productive.
Precious seam opals are the most valuable type from Honduras. These opals are found in vertical seams in blocks of volcanic black basalt outside of the town of Erandique.
The seams are often thin so opals are polished with the matrix rock still attached. An identical technique used to polish natural Australian boulder opals.
